Residents evacuated and bomb squad called on Hutchinson Island

Residents evacuated and bomb squad called on Hutchinson Island.

St Lucie Fire District crews are on scene with members of the Sheriff’s Office in a construction area on Hutchinson Island in the 7900 block of A1A. A front-end loader moving dirt, unearthed an unidentified object that omitted smoke when exposed. Homes within a quarter mile have been evacuated while the issue is investigated.

A construction crew unknowingly moved the buried military ordinance, causing the device to catch fire.

If you normally travel South A1A home, be aware there may be temporary road closures near the 7800 block (south of the power plant). Alternate routes include Indian River Drive and US 1.
