A record number of people took to the roads this holiday season, with many making their return trip Sunday, putting the Florida Highway Patrol on high alert.

With more than 4.7 million travelers expected to take travel along Florida’s highways this holiday season, drivers were delighted to enjoy a smooth ride on what was coined the second busiest travel day of the year.

In anticipation of congested roadways and aggressive drivers, the Florida Highway Patrol brought in additional staff to ensure safety.

Drivers are also taking advantage of the record low gas prices, the lowest in seven years.

The biggest issues on the roadways were caused by driver error.

The Florida highway patrol responded to about 20 accidents along the turnpike.

They anticipate Sunday will be another busy travel day with many students heading north at the close of the holiday break.
