Public Information Lines Open for Hurricane Dorian, St. Lucie County Closes Noon Aug. 30

  1. LUCIE COUNTY – St. Lucie County’s Emergency Operations Center has opened its Public Information Lines ahead of Hurricane Dorian today until 5 p.m. That number is 772-460-HELP (4357).

The Public Information Lines will reopen Friday, Aug. 30 and Saturday, Aug. 31 from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Please reserve 911 for emergency calls.

The models and forecasts for Hurricane Dorian are still uncertain. However, as of Thursday afternoon, St. Lucie County residents need to prepare for tropical force storm winds as early as Sunday. The storm seems to be slowing down and gaining strength and could impact the region as a major Category 4 hurricane.

Residents living in a low-lying areas, in a manufactured/mobile homes or on the barrier island, Public Safety officials urges you to begin making evacuation plans now. Determinations on when shelters will open are stilling being evaluated. Shelters are places of last resort. If residents have friends or family outside the storm’s projected path that they can stay with – they should make those plans and begin leaving now. Residents who might need to use the pet-friendly shelter or the special medical needs shelter are encouraged to pre-register at www.stlucieco.gov/eoc.

All St. Lucie County Board of County Commissioners offices, including libraries and special facilities, as well as the Clerk of the Court and Courthouse will close at noon on Friday, Aug. 30 to allow crews to begin shuttering buildings. The St. Lucie County Property Appraiser, Supervisor of Elections and Tax Collector will close all offices on Friday, Aug. 30.

St. Lucie Public Schools will follow an early release schedule (dismissed 2 hours early) on Friday, Aug.30. There will be no after-school activities.  This includes the cancellation of all programs by partnering agencies such as Boys & Girls Club, YMCA, etc.  All schools will be closed on Monday, Sept. 2 for the Labor Day Holiday. All school activities and athletics are suspended effective Friday, Aug. 30. All “Facility Use” Agreements are suspended.

Residents are strongly urged to follow their hurricane preparation plans. Now is the time to make sure you have plenty of water, non-perishable food, medicine, fuel, batteries and other supplies.
