The Martin County Board of County Commissioners adopted a resolution this week calling on Florida Governor Rick Scott to declare a state of emergency for the Indian River Lagoon and St. Lucie River to protect the local economy and ecosystem, including the numerous endangered species located in the Estuary which are potentially harmed by the discharges from Lake Okeechobee. Commissioners wish to also acknowledge the Governor’s actions today and thank him for his efforts to provide solutions to this most pressing issue.

“The Lagoon is at a crisis point,” said Commissioner Anne Scott. “The coming months could either bring a slow recovery or imminent collapse of our Estuary. Both require short and long term solutions.”

Commissioners also asked the State release funds to the South Water Management District (SFWMD) for temporary pumping and redirection of water to maximum capacity on other public lands, south of Lake Okeechobee. The resolution also economic assistance be provided to local businesses damaged by the discharges.

Martin County staff is in daily contact with the Corps and SFWMD regarding the releases. They continue to look for options that could relieve some of the pressure put on the St. Lucie River and Estuary.
