World Oceans Day at the St. Lucie County Aquarium

Celebrate World Oceans Day with the Smithsonian Marine Ecosystems Exhibit at the St. Lucie County Aquarium June 3

Everyone is invited to join in on the global celebration of World Oceans Day with the Smithsonian Marine Ecosystems Exhibit. It will be held  Saturday, June 3 from 10 a.m. 3 p.m. The ocean is the heart of our planet, connecting people across the Earth, no matter where we live. We play in it, eat food from it, work on it, and breathe because of it – what better reasons can you think of to celebrate the world’s oceans?

Come to the St. Lucie County Aquarium on June 3 from 10 a.m. – 3 p.m. and enjoy crafts, behind-the-scenes tours of the Aquarium and other activities that are all centered around our planet’s indispensable marine resources. There will also be hands-on demonstrations of some of the same sampling techniques used by Smithsonian researchers and aquarists to study the diversity of the Indian River Lagoon. The first 50 children who are 12 years old and younger will receive a free gift bag!   Each paid visitor will receive a free pass for a future visit to the Aquarium (expires Aug. 30).

Seining demonstrations

Seining demonstrations will be offered at 10:30 a.m., 12:30 p.m. and 2:30 p.m.  These demonstrations will give families the opportunity to get their feet wet (literally!) in the Indian River Lagoon by collecting animals – including crabs, pipefish, sea slugs and more.  Participants wishing to enter the water and participate in sampling demonstrations must wear protective footwear, such as water shoes or old sneakers, and children under 16 years old must be accompanied by an adult.  Plankton collecting demonstrations will be conducted at 11:30 a.m. and1:30 p.m. and benthic (bottom) sampling techniques at 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. Come and explore the diversity of the Indian River Lagoon with Smithsonian staff and take the opportunity to observe some of the tiniest creatures living in the Lagoon using our microscopes and live videos.

Admission to the Aquarium, located at 420 Seaway Drive on South Hutchinson Island in Fort Pierce, is $4 for adults, $3 for seniors (55+) and children 4 – 17 years old and children under 4 are free.  World Oceans Day activities are included with aquarium admission. About the Exhibit

The Smithsonian Marine Ecosystems Exhibit is located in the St. Lucie County Aquarium on South Hutchinson Island in Fort Pierce. In 2001, The Smithsonian Marine Station teamed with St. Lucie County and other community partners to create this unique educational facility.  The Ecosystems Exhibit is an outreach effort of the Smithsonian Marine Station, a branch of the Smithsonian Institution’s National Museum of Natural History.  A fixture in the Fort Pierce community for over 40 years, the Marine Station is dedicated to understanding the character and diversity of the marine and estuarine habitats of Florida.
