Words with Friends scammer costs elderly woman thousands
Stuart, Fla- A scam cost an elderly woman hundreds of thousands of dollars.
Stuart Police say that the scam started on the social game Words with Friends, where the suspects started to communicate with the victim.
Over the past seven months various money transfers occurred, ultimately leading to the victim having an out-of-state meeting with two subjects who claimed to be diplomats.
During the meeting, the diplomats handed the victim a safe that they said had $8 million in cash inside. The victim was told to not open the safe because the money was stained with a dye, and she would need a special solution to remove the dye. She paid for both the safe and the dye.
When detectives were able to open the safe, they found only $2,300 in cash inside. The suspects put $100 bills on top of stacks of dollar bills, creating an illusion that more money was inside.
Stuart Police remind everyone to never wire or send money to someone you do not know.
