Volunteers Needed To Bag Oyster Shells Jan. 20
FORT PIERCE – Volunteers are needed to help St. Lucie County create future oyster reefs on Saturday, Jan. 20 starting at 9 a.m. at Harbour Pointe Park, 350 Avenue M, Extension E.
Volunteers are need to create roughly 1,000 oyster modules to complete an oyster reef project at Indian Hills Recreation Area, which will:
- Create fish habitat;
- Filter unwanted nutrients from entering the Indian River Lagoon;
- Redirect stormwater effluent, which impacts the health and growth of seagrasses;
- Stabilize the shoreline.
This work is being done thanks to a grant from the Indian River Lagoon Estuary Program.
Volunteers should wear comfortable clothing and bring gloves, sunscreen and water.
