Volunteers Needed To Bag Oyster Shells Jan. 20

FORT PIERCE – Volunteers are needed to help St. Lucie County create future oyster reefs on Saturday, Jan. 20 starting at 9 a.m. at Harbour Pointe Park, 350 Avenue M, Extension E.

Volunteers are need to create roughly 1,000 oyster modules to complete an oyster reef project at Indian Hills Recreation Area, which will:

  • Create fish habitat;
  • Filter unwanted nutrients from entering the Indian River Lagoon;
  • Redirect stormwater effluent, which impacts the health and growth of seagrasses;
  • Stabilize the shoreline.

This work is being done thanks to a grant from the Indian River Lagoon Estuary Program.

Volunteers should wear comfortable clothing and bring gloves, sunscreen and water.

For more information about volunteering, contact St. Lucie County Coastal Resources Supervisor Jim Oppenborn at 772-462-1713 or oppenbornj@stlucieco.org.

The oyster reef program would not be possible without the dedicated support of local volunteers, as well as area restaurants and raw bars.
