Vero Beach lab helped to develop Zika Test

Vero Beach lab  helped to develop Zika Test.

Research performed  in part here on the Treasure Coast has produced a quicker and cheaper test for detecting the zika virus.

Work done by the University of Florida’s Medical Entomology Laboratory in Vero Beach helped develop the test.

It will first be used in detecting zika in the mosquito population. Eventually could be used to help detect zika in humans.

The test will also be used to detect dengue and chikungunya viruses as well. So far the only cases of the zika virus on the Treasure Coast have been travel related.

The only place in the state where zika is known to be in the mosquito population is down in parts of Miami.
