United Way Foundation Welcomes New Board Members

The United Way Foundation of Indian River County has announced the election of new board members and officers for the coming year.

“We are pleased to announce this impressive list of volunteers who have agreed to serve our community through their leadership of the United Way Foundation,” explained Michelle Malyn, Executive Director. “Our increase in activities and growth spurred a need for a larger Board of Directors. The strength and connections of our current board made it possible for us to recruit exceptional new members.”

Dennis H. Ferro is a graduate of Villanova University with an MBA from St. John’s University. A Chartered Financial Analyst, he began working for Bankers Trust Company in New York City and later established and served as president of Bankers Trust Company of Florida.

Ferro established and managed Japan Bankers Trust Company in Tokyo; oversaw the European asset management business of the Zurich Insurance Group from London, UK; and joined Evergreen Investments, an affiliate company of Wachovia, as Chief Investment Officer and later, Chief Executive Officer.

He currently serves on the Board of the Principal Financial Group, and on the Investment Committee of the American Bankers Association. Supportive of numerous charitable causes, his past service includes the Board of Directors for Hospice and Palliative Care of Charlotte, North Carolina.

Dennis and his wife, Ellen, live in Vero Beach and have three children and eight grandchildren.

Anthony Guettler is a partner in the law firm Gould Cooksey Fennell, where he focuses on complex estate planning, estate administration and tax planning.  Anthony is Board Certified as a Specialist in Wills, Trusts and Estates, holds a graduate law degree (LL.M.) in taxation, and maintains an “AV” rating by Martindale-Hubbell.  Super Lawyers names him as one of Florida’s “Rising Stars.”

Anthony actively supports a number of local charitable organizations, including the Indian River Community Foundation, Treasure Coast Gator Club and Atlantic Classical Orchestra.  In his free time, Anthony enjoys spending time with his wife Melanie and two daughters Ella and Claire.

James E. “Jim” Marley graduated from Pennsylvania State University with a B.S. in Aeronautical Engineering, and Drexel University with his M.S. in Mechanical Engineering.

Jim is the retired President, Chief Operating Officer and Chairman of the Board of AMP Incorporated, enjoying a career that spanned decades with the company.

He currently serves on several corporate Boards of Directors, and has a long history of affiliation with charitable institutions in his native, Pennsylvania.  Jim is the Past Chair of United Way of the Capital Region, Pinnacle Health System, Pennsylvania Chamber of Business and Industry, and the Technology Council of Central Pennsylvania.

Jim and his wife, Melinda, currently reside in Vero Beach.

John C. McCord is a graduate of the University of Vermont and obtained his Juris Doctorate from the University of Louisville-School of Law, starting his career as an attorney in Louisville, KY.

McCord co-founded Fellon-McCord in 1992 with partner and current CEO Andrew Fellon, and was instrumental in making the company one of the nation’s first energy consultancies.

John has ties to a number of charitable institutions in Indian River County and has served as Vice Chair of the Indian River Hospital Foundation, and a board member for both the Vero Beach Museum of Art and Riverside Theatre.  He is currently the Chair of the Distinguished Lecture Series.

John and his wife, Susan have been Vero residents since 2003.

Michael McGee is a graduate of Salisbury University with an MBA from Perdue School of Business. Michael currently serves as Senior Vice President/Senior Wealth Strategist for Northern Trust.

McGee’s resume’ includes serving as President/Managing Member of Bended Knee Joint Technologies, LLC; Managing Director/Regional Trust Executive – SE Florida for US Trust; Senior Vice-President Wachovia Wealth Management; and Private Client Advisor – Managing Director, Wilmington Trust.

Randolph K. “Randy” Rolf graduated from the University of Missouri with a BS and MS in Mechanical engineering in 1965.  Rolf was chairman, president and CEO of Unitog Company prior to his retirement.

Randy served as a board member and/or advisor for several public and private companies.  He is also involved in an advisory capacity at the University of Missouri Engineering School and has been involved in their capital campaign.

Randy has been a board member of the Indian River Hospital Foundation and the John’s Island Foundation.  He and his wife, Sandy, actively support several other not for profit entities in Indian River County including the Vero Beach Museum of Art, Gifford Youth Activity Center, United Against Poverty, the American Red Cross and the Indian River Community Foundation.

He and Sandy have been residents of Vero Beach since 1999 and have two children, two grandchildren, and one great grandchild.

David E. Sams Jr., Chief Executive Officer of G2 Investment Group LLC also serves as Chief Executive Officer at Delaware Life Insurance Company. He founded Otter Cove Associates, LLC in 1997; served as the President of Massachusetts Mutual Life Insurance Company; served as President of Sammons Enterprises, Inc.; served as the President and Chief Executive Officer of Providian’s agent-sold insurance operations and as Chairman of life insurance subsidiaries for 27 years.

Mr. Sams earned a Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Louisville and attended the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania. He also completed the Executive Program, Amos Tuck Graduate School at Dartmouth College in 1980.

Marlynn Scully, along with her husband Bill, are widely known for their generous philanthropy. They may be best known in this area for their gift of $12 million to open the Scully-Welsh Cancer Center at Indian River Medical Center.

Marlynn has served as President of the John’s Island Community Service League, and has been active with that group for many years.  She is also affiliated with numerous other charities here in Indian River County and has been at the forefront of a host of collaborative efforts, including the establishment of the Indian River County Funders Forum, and the Kindergarten Readiness Coalition.

Scully resides with her husband in Vero Beach, and they spend summers in Dorset, VT.

Jonathan Schwiering, a Vero Beach native, began his insurance career in 2002 working for Ballantyne McKean & Sullivan, a brokerage firm at Lloyd’s of London.  Jonathan returned to FL, became a shareholder in Vero Insurance in 2009 and obtained his Certified Insurance Counselor designation.

Jonathan and his wife, Susan, have 3 children. I would add that Jonathan has worked our last annual campaigns as a Division Chair.
