TreasureCoast Covid 19 Update May 14 2020

The Department of Health is reporting another 48 deaths in Florida from the coronavirus. The statewide death toll is now 18-hundred-27 with more than 42-thousand cases. More than half of the fatalities and cases are centered in Miami-Dade, Broward and Palm Beach counties. Testing for the coronavirus will become a regular routine for Floridians.

Governor Ron DeSantis says more testing is being done at nursing homes and assisted living centers. There is even a testing RV that can be deployed across the state.

There will be another sign of life returning to normal in Central Florida today. Universal Orlando’s CityWalk reopens at 4 o’clock this afternoon. All theme parks remain closed, though, and no reopening dates have been announced. Anyone attending CityWalk must wear a mask and get their temperature checked.

Tentative plans are to reopen beaches in Palm Beach County on Monday, and that decision could have a big impact on the Treasure Coast. Beaches from Indian River County to Martin County are already open under differing restrictions.

Florida could soon be the hottest spot in the country for professional sports.

Gov. Ron DeSantis announced on Wednesday that he plans to open up the Sunshine State to any professional sports team that wants to resume activity.

“All professional sports are welcome here for practicing and for playing,” DeSantis said at a news conference in Tallahassee. “What I would tell commissioners of leagues is, if you have a team in an area where they just won’t let them operate, we’ll find a place for you here in the state of Florida.”

Last month, the Florida Division of Emergency Management said professional sports are considered “essential services” and can resume in Florida, provided they are closed to the general public. The governor said on Wednesday that while sporting events may not necessarily have fans at first, he’s welcoming all teams from all professional leagues.
