Treasure Coast Holiday Update

TreasureCoast, Fl (treasurecoast.com)- Drivers can get a free pick me up on Florida’s Turnpike at select times this holiday season. Florida’s Turnpike Enterprise and the state’s Department of Transportation have established free coffee breaks for drivers during heavy travel times to promote safety. Drivers can go to the Turkey Lake, Canoe Creek, Fort Drum, Fort Pierce, and West Palm Beach rest areas for the free coffee. The next time the coffee will be available is from 11pm Tuesday, New Years Eve, until 6am Wednesday, New Years Day. Coffee will again be available for free overnight on New Years Day until the morning of January 2nd. FDOT says the normal morning and afternoon rush-hour periods of 7-10am and 4-7pm may be congested with holiday travelers and local commuters on their way to work. They encourage motorists to schedule their travel around these peak hours.

Even with Christmas now behind us, there will be some more holiday gatherings over the next few days, plus New Year’s Celebrations next week. That’s why Triple-A’s Tow 2 Go program will remain active through the New Year. If you are heading out to a party, plan ahead to make sure you and your loved ones don’t get behind the wheel of a vehicle while drunk. Have a designated driver or utilize ride sharing services like Uber and Lyft. But if you find yourself out and need a way to get both you and your car home, Triple A’s service is free for both members, and non-members. From now through 6am on January 2nd, call 855-2-TOW-2-GO, and they will take you and your car home, or to another safe location.

If you plan to head to the beach over the next few days, try to swim in waters being watched by lifeguards. The National Weather Service says there’s a high rip current risk in effect through Friday afternoon for both St Lucie and Martin Counties. Lifeguards warn swimmers if you are caught in a rip current to relax and float. Don’t swim against the current, rather swim parallel to the shoreline. If you are unable to escape, face the shore and call or wave for help.
