Melbourne, Fla (treasurecoast.com)-The National Weather Service in Melbourne is reporting hazardous weather for the Treasure Coast.

Here are the affected areas: Flagler Beach to Volusia-Brevard County Line -Volusia- Brevard County Line to Sebastian Inlet  Sebastian Inlet to Jupiter Inlet 0-20 nm-Flagler Beach to Volusia- Brevard County Line 20-60 nm-Volusia- Brevard County Line to Sebastian Inlet 20-60 nm- Sebastian Inlet to Jupiter Inlet 20-60 nm-Inland Volusia County- Northern Lake County-Orange-Seminole-Southern Brevard County- Osceola-Indian River-Okeechobee-St. Lucie-Martin- Coastal Volusia County-Southern Lake County- Northern Brevard County.

TODAY AND TONIGHT

RIP CURRENT IMPACT- Breezy north winds will result in rough surf and a southward flowing longshore current along the beaches today. A longshore current flows parallel to the beach and can be strong enough to knock you off the sandbar and into deep water. Avoid swimming near piers and jetties where seaward flowing rip currents will be strong. If you choose to enter the chilly surf, only do so near a lifeguard

WIND AND SEA IMPACT-Hazardous marine conditions for small craft will develop today as a surge of north winds spreads over the local coastal waters. Seas will build up to 7 feet nearshore and 9 feet offshore and in the Gulf Stream. Small craft advisories are in effect for all of the east central Florida waters.

SATURDAY THROUGH THURSDAY. Winds and seas will increase once again early next week as high pressure builds into Florida behind another strong cold front. Boating and beach conditions are likely to become hazardous for operators of small craft.

BEACH HAZARDS STATEMENT IN EFFECT THROUGH THIS AFTERNOON. The National Weather Service in Melbourne has issued a Beach Hazards Statement for rough surf, which is in effect through this afternoon.

HAZARDS- Breezy north winds will produce increasingly rough surf and a southward flowing current along the beaches today.

 POTENTIAL IMPACTS-Rough surf and a southward flowing current near the shore will create hazardous conditions in the surf zone. Strong rip currents will also occur near piers, jetties, and reefs.

PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS- A beach hazards statement is issued when threats such as rough surf and longshore currents create life-threatening conditions in the surf zone. Longshore currents commonly occur when waves approach the shoreline at an angle. They often produce rip currents near jetties, piers, and reefs. Longshore currents can knock you off a sandbard and into deeper water. The best safety advice is to only enter the chilly surf near lifeguard.
