Train derails with molten sulfur in Polk County

Polk County,Fla- Polk County Fire Rescue is currently on scene at a train derailment in the area of Kathleen Road and Strickland Road. Engine 111 was returning from a medical call around 1:50 a.m. when the crew observed several train cars rolled over and mangled.

The train is believed to be carrying molten sulfur. Hazmat crews are working with CSX and state officials to investigate if there are any leaks. Kathleen road is closed between Galloway Road and Spivey Road.

It is likely the road will remain closed through rush hour. At this time there are no evacuations; however, residents along Strickland Road are asked to shelter in place.

Residents are being asked to close their windows, shut off their air conditioners and to stay within their homes.
