Toxic Green Algae: Awaken State Legislators! State or Federal Someone has got to help!

Toxic Green Algae: Awaken State Legislators! State or Federal Someone has got to help!

We are now learning that President Obama didn’t think the river problems was an emergency when he was here. I doubt he would say this now looking at the river.

This is what happened and please read so you understand how all this works:

St Lucie County Commissioner Kim Johnson spoke with the President before he went back home on Sunday. According to Johnson, quote “the President basically said it’s not bad enough for him to get involved.” end quote. In the rain on Sunday, Johnson was the final person to meet with the President during his Treasure Coast visit. When he asked for the President’s support on the river, Obama said it needs to be done on a state level, because it hasn’t been declared an emergency at the federal level yet. Governor Scott has declared a state of emergency, and health advisories have been posted in St Lucie and Martin counties for bacteria, plus green algae blooms are growing daily, but as of now according to the President more needs to be done at the state level before the feds will get involved.

Our state legislators should screaming at the top of their lungs to advocate for us! But we can’t hear them because they are not even speaking out on their Facebook pages! Joe Negron, Mary Lynn Magar nor Gayle Harrell have anything about the toxic discharges on their pages. Not a thing.

Where are they?  Eating lion fish , going to receptions, and going to the opening of Bathtub Beach which now closed because of the algae. I would say they are ignorning the elephant in the room but this issue beyond the elephant.

This is for you guys in case you have not seen the water.

A friend of mine, Jennie Pawlowsky, who is a clean water advocate, a yoga and meditation instructor,a pet sitter and just an all around mindful person wrote this and she has given me permission to share it with you.  Jennie is an avid Paddleboarder and she drives to Jupiter to go on her Paddle board. She is also a fabulous photographer and we post her awesome photos all the time here.

“Dear Rick Scott:

In the summer of 2013, at the height of my paddleboard yoga business, I lost my business teaching yoga classes on the water. But it’s ok because I’m resourceful and creative and I can find different work. I’ve since watched other people lose their water related businesses. I’ve watched dead fish, manatee, dolphin and birds wash up on the shore line from this. I have friends that have developed rashes, fever and other related sicknesses to this toxic water that YOU allow to continue to come our way. We’ve pleaded to you for years to get this problem fixed and it just keeps getting worse every year.

You know how to fix the problem yet you keep ignoring the situation like it’s a bad dream. Scientists have now linked toxic algae to Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s and other neuro-degenerative conditions.

When you have blood on your hands will you FINALLY take notice of us and stop allowing BIG SUGAR to prostitute you out? Because really, that’s how we see you anyways…as just a prostitute. You don’t care about us. You don’t care about our jobs. You don’t care about the environment. You don’t care about our health. You don’t care about our children or animals. You don’t care about the wildlife. You only care about taking money from BIG SUGAR and helping your rich buddies out.”

I could not have said it any better.

This has got to stop!

Here is your water advisory. We didn’t care what anyone said.  we told you to stay out of the water!

Martin County, FL – The Florida Department of Health in Martin County reminds residents to avoid contact with visible blue-green algae (cyanobacteria) in any waterbody. Advisory signage is in place in public access points from Port Mayaca near Lake Okeechobee up through Sandsprit Park in Stuart. Additional signage will be put in place as necessary and as sampling results become available.

Test results today and in recent weeks from the Florida Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) have confirmed the presence of the toxin, microcystin. Exposure to water containing algae toxins may cause gastrointestinal effects if swallowed and rash if touched or inhaled.

If you spot blue-green algae, contact DEP at 407-897-4177. Additional information is available at: https://depnewsroom.wordpress.com/south-florida-algal-bloo…/

To report a fish kill, contact Florida Fish and Wildlife Commission at 800-636-0511.

For health related questions, contact the Florida Department of Health in Martin County at 772-221-4090.

What can you do to help?

You can call your legislators and tell them you want action. You want to hear them on the news telling us what the plan is to stop the discharges immediately! Flood their offices with phone calls! If they do not her from their constituents then they will do nothing.
