Oysters provide several critical ecosystem services such as filtering nutrients and particles from the water and food for shorebirds and marine animals. Unfortunately, it is estimated that oyster populations have been reduced by 85% globally.

This year, the Fort Pierce Oyster Fest is proud to be working again with the Florida Oceanographic Society and their FLOOR program.

The FL.O.O.R. (Florida Oceanographic Oyster Restoration) program actively engages the public in restoring oyster reef habitat. Oyster shells are collected weekly from local restaurants as part of the Florida Oceanographic Society shell recycling program. Then, with the aid of volunteers, FLOOR restores oyster habitat by constructing reefs with the bagged shells. Shucked shells are the foundation of oyster reef construction.

During preparation, a team of Oyster Shuckers separate and drop the top half of the oyster shell into collection bins. Event guests eating these oysters are asked to save the bottom half of their shells by placing them into 5-gallon pails that are located next to trash receptacles throughout the festival.

The Oyster festival typically brings in 15,000 attendees a year. Opportunities are still available for sponsors, vendors, volunteers, and oyster shuckers.
