Temperatures in Vero Beach and Fort Pierce on Sunday morning tied decades-old record lows
Treasure Coast, Fl (treasurecoast.com) – As the Treasure Coast donned winter jackets and gloves over the weekend, temperatures in Vero Beach and Fort Pierce on Sunday morning tied decades-old record lows, according to the National Weather Service in Melbourne.
The mercury got up to just 30 degrees in Vero Beach, equaling a record last set in 1978, while temperatures measured 32 degrees in Fort Pierce, tying a record last set in 1966. Temperatures in Stuart were 39, according to NWS records accessed online.
Kole Fehling, a meteorologist with the NWS in Melbourne, said Sunday that multiple cold fronts came through. In many instances, he said, one cold front will come through, and it will warm quickly.
Fehling said he thought more inland areas dropped to the hard freezing point, which is when temperatures reach 27 degrees or lower for two hours or more. Temperatures tend to be warmer in coastal areas.
An informal survey of a handful of areas near downtown Stuart on Sunday morning revealed a handful of homes where some plants were covered. Few people were out walking pets or exercising.
No precipitation is forecast over the next several days, Fehling said, perhaps not until the upcoming weekend.
Fehling said temperatures will warm through the week, and said a warming trend already has started. Monday will be into the mid- to upper 60s and lower 70s by Tuesday.
Still, Sunday night is expected to be quite chilly, though “not as bad” as Saturday night.
Fehling suggested not leaving pets out for long periods of time, and also to be mindful of individuals who are sensitive to the cold.
