Teen shot by jewelry store owner has died

Martin County, Fl- A teenager who was shot last month by a jewelry store owner on the Treasure Coast has died.

The owner said he felt his life was threatened after the teen robbed his store. The State Attorney’s office did not press charges against the owner.

This happened on December 13th, at the Treasure Coast Liquidators off of US1, a 17-year-old boy went in asking to see gold rings and a gold chain. Barbara Dacey, the owner of the store, said he tried on three rings. She told the teen he couldn’t try them all on at onc. Then, according to a document from the Martin County Sheriff’s office, the teen threatened her life. Dacey’s husband, Michael, said the teen ran out of the store with the rings. He then got into a Jeep, driven by a 16-year-old. Michael Dacey shot at the car as it drove away, hitting the 17-year-old in the head.

The family of the teen hired the Shiner Law firm. They said in a blog post that he died on December 19th. A later post said they planned to file a wrongful death lawsuit against Michael Dacey.

“Boca Raton, Palm Beach County, Florida – December 28, 2018 – Chrishanda McMillian has retained the law firm of Shiner Law Group, P.A. in connection with the unjustified fatal shooting of her 17-year-old son, Jakeem McMillian, which took place on December 13, 2018, outside Treasure Coast Jewelry at Granada Plaza in Martin County, Florida.

Video surveillance outside of Treasure Coast Jewelry captured the unnecessary shooting. The video depicts Jakeem – a juvenile black male – running and entering the front passenger seat of a Jeep while being chased by a store employee. As the vehicle begins to exit the parking lot, former police officer, Michael Dacey – a 57-year-old white male – appears to recklessly fire gunshots at the vehicle.”

The Martin County Sheriff said last month it’s unlikely Michael Dacey will be charged. The sheriff said under Florida law, it’s likely the 16-year-old getaway driver will be charged with murder, among other charges.
