Storm off our southern coast could develop into tropical storm or depression

TreasureCoast, FL-Forecasters say a storm system near the southern coast of Florida could develop into a tropical depression or a tropical storm during the next few days.

Forecasters from the National Hurricane Center originally thought a weak area of low pressure near the Florida Keys had only a 20 percent chance of becoming organized and turning into a tropical depression. But now the probability has been boosted to 40 percent during the next two days and 70 percent during the next five days.

If the system becomes a depression and its sustained winds reach 39 mph or higher, it could then be upgraded into a tropical storm, which would be named Dorian.

The hurricane center said the storm system could develop close to the southeastern U.S. coast, towards the Carolinas, before turning out to sea.
