St. Lucie County Urges Residents to Monitor Hurricane Elsa

  1. LUCIE COUNTY – St. Lucie County’s Public Safety staff is monitoring Hurricane Elsa’s track toward Florida. The county’s Emergency Management staff is continuing to consult with state and federal officials and make preparations for potential impacts from this storm.

As of Friday afternoon, the storm has intensified to a Category 1 Hurricane, but is expected to weaken to a tropical storm as it approaches Florida. Tropical storm-force winds and rains could impact our region as early as Monday, July 5.

St. Lucie County’s Public Works staff is coordinating with regional water management districts to lower canals and ditches, as well as cleaning drains and staging pumps/generators as part of its pre-storm preparations.

Residents are encouraged to make their own storm preparations and plans. At this time there are no plans to activate shelters. However, if the storm’s track changes and residents feel that they may need to stay in the medical special needs shelter or a pet-friendly shelter, they should pre-register at www.readystlucie.org.

St. Lucie County’s Building and Code Compliance Division asked all active construction sites to secure debris, trash, equipment and construction materials before the storm arrives.

Additionally, residents are reminded to not place large piles of vegetative debris along the roadside until after the storm has passed. WastePro is schedule to host several drop-off locations for all unincorporated St. Lucie County residents on Friday, July 9 and Saturday, July 10 from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. St. Lucie County residents, who live outside the city limits of Port St. Lucie and Fort Pierce, will be allowed to drop off yard waste at no charge at the following locations:

  • Indrio Schoolhouse Park, 8850 Indrio Road, Fort Pierce;
  • Fenn Center (empty lot west of the building), 2000 Virginia Ave., Fort Pierce;
  • Gwenda Thompson Trades Career Center/St. Lucie County Logistics Center, 3855 US Highway 1, Fort Pierce.
