St. Lucie County Sheriff’s Office to Launch Second Phase for Operation Look Both Ways

Sheriff Ken Mascara announced today that the St. Lucie County Sheriff’s Office will implement a second phase for Operation Look Both Ways starting tonight at 6:00 p.m. During this second phase, St. Lucie County Sheriff’s Office deputies will once again distribute bicycle light kits and educational material at two locations along U.S. Highway 1 in Fort Pierce and Port St. Lucie.

The high-visibility enforcement operation first launched on Tuesday, Aug. 16, 2022, as part of a contract from the University of North Florida in partnership with the Florida Department of Transportation to develop and implement high-visibility education and enforcement locally within areas identified as having high levels of traffic crashes, which have resulted in serious and/or fatal injuries to pedestrians and bicyclists. The contract is between the agency and the University of North Florida.

Under the grant agreement, the Sheriff’s Office will conduct ongoing high-visibility education and enforcement operations through May 12, 2023, as part of a Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) initiative to mitigate crashes by increasing awareness of and compliance with traffic laws that protect the safety of pedestrians and bicyclists on Florida roads.

“Impaired and distracted drivers traveling at high levels of speed are a major safety concern for pedestrians and bicyclists,” said Sheriff Mascara. “Pedestrians and bicyclists can reduce their risk of being hit by a vehicle by staying alert and following the rules of the road.”

According to the Florida Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles, traffic crashes contributed to 3,332 deaths in 2020. More than 21% of those who lost their lives on Florida roads were pedestrians and more than 5% were bicyclists.

This operation is supported by the FDOT’s Florida’s Bicycle Pedestrian Focused Initiative as part of an award totaling $8,317.81, with 0% financed with non-governmental source, under project number 433144-1-8404, contract #G2A92.
