St. Lucie County Sheriff’s Office Clears Ave. R Shooting Suspect under Florida’s Stand Your Ground Law

 

St.Lucie County, Fl (treasurecoast.com)- Today, St. Lucie County Sheriff Ken Mascara announced the following update on the shooting incident that occurred on Saturday, July 9, at approximately 7:15 p.m., near the 2500 block of Ave. R in Fort Pierce.

According to Sheriff Mascara, detectives have identified the deceased suspect as 29-year-old Jarvarious E. Coston of Ft. Pierce.

“Based on our investigation, detectives learned that Coston engaged in a verbal altercation with the victim. At which time, Coston threatened the victim with a handgun,” said Sheriff Mascara. “Fearing for his life, the victim drew his legally concealed weapon and fired at the suspect, which resulted in the suspect’s death.

According to Sheriff Mascara, detectives have determined that this case is a justifiable homicide under Florida`s Stand Your Ground law. The victim felt a reasonable threat of death or bodily injury and met force with force to preserve his own life. As such, the victim will not face charges for the shooting death of Jarvarious Coston

“This is a difficult situation for everyone involved,” said Sheriff Mascara. “Any loss of life is tragic.”
