St. Lucie County Seeks Public Input on the Future of Public Transit

St. Lucie County, FL (treasurecoast.com)-  St. Lucie County’s Transit Division is currently seeking input on the current public transit system to develop future routes and services. To provide your feedback please visit www.St.LucieTransitOptimization.com, before April 1.

Because of wide variety of public needs for public transportation, the demands can often conflict. This study aims to create a transit network that better meets the needs of its residents, businesses and visitors whether that is getting tourists from their hotel to the beach or students to after-school activities or seniors, who can no longer drive, to medical appointments.

The county’s Transit Division has collaborated with the St. Lucie Transportation Planning Organization, in partnership with consultant assistance by Jarrett Walker + Associates, to complete a Transit Route Optimization Study.

The St. Lucie County Transit Route Optimization Study will evaluate the county’s existing public transportation services and identify financially sustainable opportunities to optimize service, improve service quality and meet the demands of the county’s growing population. The results will summarize and assist stakeholders in developing a shared understanding of opportunities and challenges.

The public involvement component of the study will include a public survey, stakeholder presentations and a design workshop to develop two network alternatives. The purpose of the alternatives is to present and analyze two contrasting visions of the bus network that illustrate the difficult trade-offs that decision-makers face. Both network alternatives would be operable and fit within available resources.

The Transit Route Optimization Study is expected to be completed by the end of 2021. These efforts are being conducted as part of the planning/policy recommendations identified in Bus Plus, the St. Lucie Country Transit Development Plan 2020-2029.
