St. Lucie County Hurricane Dorian Update 10 Sept 3, 2019

 

  1. LUCIE COUNTY – As of Tuesday morning, Hurricane Dorian continues to hover over the Bahamas, but has started to slowly make its trek to the northeast. The category 3 storm will be impacting St. Lucie County with tropical storm force winds and heavy rain through Wednesday, Sept. 4. Rain projections have decreased to four to six inches. The biggest threats for our area remain high surf and tropical force storm winds.

Power Outages

As of 8 a.m. roughly 500 residents in St. Lucie County were without power.  To report outages for FPL contact 1-800-4OUTAGE (800-468-8243) or download the app by texting “App” to MyFPL (69375). To report Fort Pierce Utilities Authority outrages by calling 772-466-7703.

Evacuations

Mandatory evacuations for residents on the barrier island (North and South Hutchinson Island), those living in low-lying coastal areas and manufactured homes/mobile homes were issued Sunday, Sept. 1 at 2 p.m. and remain in effect. Entry to the barrier islands will be limited to residents and business owners starting at 8 a.m. Monday, Sept. 2.  Depending on the winds, access on and off the island could shut down. You will not need a re-entry placard to enter the island after the storm but will need two forms of documentation proving ownership or residency.

Shelters

St. Lucie County’s Public Safety staff, in cooperation with St. Lucie Public Schools and the America Red Cross, opened shelters on Sunday, Sept. 1 at 2 p.m., ahead of Hurricane Dorian. As of 7 a.m. Monday, 800 residents are seeking shelter in a one of the county’s officially designated facilities.

Evacuations

Road conditions are expected to worsen through the night. Law enforcement agencies urge residents to stay home and off the roads until this storm passes. Many intersections have limited signalization and drivers that have to be on the road should use caution. If power is out at a signaled intersection, remember to treat it as a four-way stop.

Uber/Free Rides

St. Lucie County is no longer be able to provide transportation to shelters. However, Uber will be offering free round trip rides, up to $20 each way, to and from a state-approved evacuation shelter. Meeting Cancelations/Closures

St. Lucie Public Schools (SLPS) will remain closed through Wednesday, Sept. 4.  Parents, students and staff are asked to refer to the SLPS web page, social media outlets, School Messenger and local media partners for updates.

All St. Lucie County Board of County Commissioners offices, including libraries and special facilities, as well as the Clerk of the Court, Courthouse, Property Appraiser, Supervisor of Elections and Tax Collector will be closed through Wednesday, Sept. 4.

The St. Lucie County Board of County Commission meeting for Tuesday, Sept. 3 and the Code Compliance meeting for Wednesday, Sept. 4 have been canceled.

All St. Lucie County beaches, parks and preserves are closed. Lifeguards have been pulled from the beaches to assist with shelters.
