St. Lucie County Hosts Workshop to Review Proposed Redistricting Maps Nov. 4

FORT PIERCE (treasurecoast.com) – Every decade local governments are required to update the district boundaries for locally elected officials based off the latest U.S. Census figures. St. Lucie County will hold a Public Open House on Thursday, Nov. 4 at 6 p.m. in the Commission Chambers of the Roger Poitras Administration Complex, 2300 Virginia Ave., for residents to review the proposed county commission districts and ask questions about the process.

St. Lucie County’s Geographic Information Systems Division used the latest Census data to create three different district maps for the public to review. Residents can view these proposed district maps online at https://gis.stlucieco.gov/boccredistricting.

County governments are required to take into account the Census population figures every 10 years to make sure each county commission district is representing roughly the same amount of residents (within 3 percent). The St. Lucie County School Board also uses the same district boundaries. St. Lucie County Commissioners and School Board Members are voted at-large, meaning every registered voter in the county gets to vote on each of the five district representatives for both the school board and county commission.

Once residents have the opportunity to provide feedback on the proposed districts, County Commissioners are expected to vote on the final map in early December.

If residents are unable to attend the Nov. 4 workshop, they can provide feedback via email through a link on the webpage with the proposed maps:https://gis.stlucieco.gov/boccredistricting.
