St. Lucie County District 2 Commissioner Mowery Resigns Citing Personal Reasons

FORT PIERCESt. Lucie County District 2 Commissioner Tod Mowery advised County Administration Monday evening of his intent to resign from office, effective Jan. 1, 2018 citing personal reasons.

Mowery sent a letter to Florida Gov. Rick Scott announcing his decision to step down from public office. He said he needed to work “through deeply private issues.” Mowery was elected to serve the District 2 County Commission seat in 2010. He was re-elected in 2014.

Mowery’s resignation came two weeks after a county firefighter publicly accused him of engaging in an extramarital affair with his wife while Mowery served on the county Fire District board. Peter Villasuso sent the letter to Governor Scott.  He claims it “not only shows his callous disregard for the sanctity of marriage, but also shows his breach of fiduciary duty to the firefighters of the fire district.”

St. Lucie County officials will work with Governor Scott’s Office regarding how to move forward with the vacant County Commission seat. The District 2 seat is scheduled to be on the ballot during the 2018 election cycle.  St. Lucie County Commissioners are elected county-wide. They serve one of five districts, serving four-year terms.
