St. Lucie County Conducting Emergency Repairs to Picos Road

St. LUCIE COUNTY – St. Lucie County Public Works is working through an emergency contract to reopen Picos Road off of Kings Highway.

The deteriorated conditions of a large culvert under the roadway caused Picos Road to be closed at the Kings Highway intersection in early December. St. Lucie County’s Public Works staff has had difficulty finding a replacement culvert of the same size due to supply chain issues.

The county has hired Halley Engineering Contractors to design and install the replacement culvert at a cost of $470,000. Construction is expected to begin Feb. 21 and is expected to last six to eight weeks.

Under the emergency contract, the contractor’s compressed work schedule is to have the road open by the end of April, but crews will strive to have the roadway open to traffic at an earlier date, weather permitting.

Halley Engineering Contractors was selected for this emergency contract as the company is already working on the Kings Highway widening and has crews and equipment staged near Picos Road. Funding for this projects comes from budget reserves for emergency culvert replacements.
