Sheriff Mascara discusses overnight robbery-homicide

Good morning.

Sadly, this past weekend our community experienced two incidents of gunfire violence where two young lives were lost. The first one occurred Saturday night on Booker Street, and the Fort Pierce Police Department is investigating that incident.

The second incident occurred last night, 6/21/2015 at about 11:26 P.M.

St. Lucie County Sheriff’s Deputies responded to the area of Seneca Avenue and Hugo Road in unincorporated St. Lucie County, north of Fort Pierce, in reference to an unknown male subject with a gunshot wound. The caller provided very little information about the injury or location.

Patrol deputies canvassed the area on foot and located Christopher Hilton (black male, DOB 6/7/1991, 25 years old, of 701 S.W. Ravenswood Lane, Port St. Lucie) lying on the ground, deceased, behind the residence located at 2714 Niagara Avenue.

Hilton had a single gunshot wound to the chest. Deputies located Derry Jermaine Barron (black male, DOB 11/23/1994, 21 years old, of 2714 Niagara Avenue) inside the residence at that location.

Based upon witness statements and an ongoing investigation, it was discovered that Barron and another suspect had participated in a robbery at that location which resulted in Hilton’s death. Barron was arrested for robbery and felony murder.

The investigation is ongoing at this time, and the other suspect is actively being sought. His identity will be released upon his arrest.

If anyone has additional information about this incident they can call the St. Lucie County Sheriff’s Office Criminal Investigation Division at 772-462-3230, or you can remain anonymous and call Crime Stoppers at 800-273-TIPS, that is 800-273-8477.
