Rain Lifts St. Lucie County Burn Ban, Creates Mosquito Concerns

Rain Lifts St. Lucie County Burn Ban, Creates Mosquito Concerns

St. Lucie County Public Safety officials are lifting the burn ban that has been in effect since April 21.

Following a conference call with other Treasure Coast public safety representatives, including the St. Lucie County Fire District and Florida Forest Service, St. Lucie County is not extending its burn ban, which is set to expire Friday, June 9. The last time St. Lucie County issued a county-wide burn ban was in the spring of 2011.

While this week’s rains extinguished the risk of wildfires, it does create the potential for mosquito breeding. Residents are reminded to “tip and toss” standing water that is collecting around their yards – when possible. Some mosquitoes need no more than a bottle cap of water to breed. Standing water should be covered or tossed weekly.
