The FBI director reported that they are going through Omar Mateens life to understand if there was anyone one involved assisting him or directing him. So far they do not see any indication of a plot directed from anywhere outside of the US and they see no indication that he was part of any kind of network. It is even unclear what type of terrorist group he inspired to support. He made 911 calls from the club three times. He called and hung up. He called and talked to the dispatcher and hung up and then the dispatcher call him back. He did say he was doing this for the leader for ISIL who he named. He also claimed solidarity to the Tsarnaev brothers from the Boston Marathon Bombing and solidarity with a man who died as a suicide bomber in Syria with a group that was in conflict from ISIL. Then there is the fact that the Tsarnaev brothers were not allied with ISIL.

The FBI spent 10 months investigating Omar Mateen in 2013 and 2014. They secretly recorded his conversations and monitored his Internet communications. After he had claimed to co-workers that he had “family connections to al-Qaida” and made “inflammatory” statements that raised concerns about possible ties to terrorism, FBI Director James Comey said today.

The FBI closed out that probe in May 2014 after Mateen, during the course of two FBI interviews, told agents he had made those statements “in anger” because he thought his co-workers were discriminating against him and were “teasing him because he was a Muslim,” Comey said.

Comey revealed those details as well as evidence uncovered during a second aborted FBI probe of Mateen that took place just a few months later. He told reporters that the FBI’s investigation has uncovered “strong indications” that Mateen had become radicalized and potentially inspired by foreign terrorist groups.

But, he added, “so far, we see no indication that this was a plot directed from outside the United States and we see no indication he was part of a network.”

Noor Salmon, the shooter’s wife, has been cooperating with the FBI. She told Federal investigators that she tried to stop her husband from committing the attack. Salman could face possible charges in his attack. She  told investigators that she drove him to the Pulse nightclub at least once to check it out and that she was with him when he purchased ammunition.
