PSLPD School Resource Officer Arrests 10th Grade Student With Loaded Firearm on Campus

Port St. Lucie (treasurecoast.com) -At approximately 9:00am this morning, PSLPD School Resource Officer McCarty was conducting a perimeter check of Treasure Coast High School and observed three male students walk onto school campus after school had already begun.

School Resource Officer McCarty informed school administration who spoke to the students and smelled an odor of marijuana. School administration conducted a search of the student’s backpacks and located a loaded .22 Taurus firearm in one backpack. No additional firearms were located.

PSLPD arrested D’Shawn Sears, 15 years year old, for possession of a firearm on school property, carrying a concealed firearm, and grand theft of a firearm. The firearm was reported stolen in Indian River County in October 2020.

The safety of students and staff continues to be PSLPD’s top priority. Due to the partnership and effective communication between School Resource Officer McCarty and School Administration, we were able to remove a loaded firearm from school property. Our goal is to ensure a safe learning environment for all students. As a reminder to parents, please inform children “If they see something, say something.”
