PSLPD Officer Narrowly Escapes Injury After Suspected Drunk Driver Crashes Into Patrol Car

Port St. Lucie, Fl (treasurecoast.com)- A  Port St. Police Officer narrowly escapes injury after suspected drunk driver crashes into  his patrol car.

This is what happened:

At approximately 2:16 am this morning, Officers were in the 3000-BLK of SW Port St. Lucie Blvd conducting an unrelated DUI investigation which led to the arrest of a 30-year-old man. During this investigation, officers were parked in the right southbound lane with their emergency lights activated when they observed a vehicle traveling southbound at a high rate of speed in the right lane.
As Officer Magura was standing in the roadway and about to get into his vehicle, he realized the suspect’s vehicle was not slowing down or changing lanes.

Officer Magura had no choice but to run east across SW Port St. Lucie Blvd to avoid getting hit by the suspect’s vehicle. The vehicle struck Officer Magura’s driver’s side mirror, where he was just standing, with their passenger side mirror and continued driving driving southbound.

Sergeant Levasseur followed the suspect’s vehicle and conducted a traffic stop near SW PSL Blvd and SW Fisherman Ave. Officers completed a DUI investigation and the driver, Joseph Lara 27 years old, was arrested and taken to jail for driving under the influence. Officers learned Lara just came from a local bar and consumed several alcoholic beverages.
PSLPD is grateful that Officer Magura was able to narrowly escape this crash without injury. Thank you Officer Magura for your service and as a reminder to the community….Please do not drink and drive.
