PSL: Witnesses chase down hit & run driver

Community members were chasing a suspect around a Walmart parking lot after a hit and run on Saturday.

A couple said they were heading to Walmart when a silver four door Mitsubishi was driving behind them honking their horn. The car followed them into the Walmart parking lot. Then the car hit them from behind.

The police report states that when the passenger got out of the car to look at the damage, the driver of the Mitsubishi then drove forward and hit the passenger, running over his foot and ankle.

The driver as 21-year-old Demetrius Sawyer. Sawyer attempted to leave the scene, but the victim’s wife and a separate witness began to chase him around the parking lot.

One of the employees of Walmart was the owner of the Mitsubishi and knew Sawyer. He was able to calm the situation down until police arrived.

Sawyer was charged with aggravated battery with a deadly weapon, leaving the scene of a traffic accident with personal injury, and driving a motor vehicle without a license.
