PSL High School student in custody after PSLPD founds guns, ammunition
Port St Lucie, Fl- A 17-year-old student is in custody after police found a gun, ammunition, and ‘items of concern’ in his possession at Port St. Lucie High School according to the PSLPD.
On Thursday, April 12th, 2018, Police and Detectives began an investigation into an incident that involved a 17 year old student, Tavaress Lashun Smith Jr. Smith attends Port Saint Lucie High School as a Junior.
This investigation began when school officials became aware of a student possibly in possession of a firearm while at Port Saint Lucie High School. Due to the nature of this allegation, a Port St. Lucie Police Department School Resource Officer was contacted and made aware of the allegations.
Contact was made with Tavaress Smith and he was found in possession of a 9mm Taurus handgun, 1 magazine containing 12 rounds, another magazine containing 1 round, 57 loose rounds of ammunition, 1 silver necklace, 1 gold necklace, 49 pieces of prop movie money in one hundred dollar bills and an Electronic Control Device, commonly called a “Taser” inside his school backpack.

Smith was then taken into custody. All of the items found in his possession were seized. He stated in his interview with detectives he knew about the firearm that was located but he didn’t know it was in his school backpack.
Smith was charged with violating F.S.S. 790.115 (2C1) – POSSESSION OF WEAPON-FIREARM ON SCHOOL PROPERTY and F.S.S. 790.115 (2B) – POSSESSION OF WEAPON-ON SCHOOL PROPERTY. Smith was then transported to the Saint Lucie Regional Juvenile Detention Center and booked.
