Port St. Lucie Police Sergeant put on un-paid administrative leave after his arrest.

Port St. LucieOn Thursday, August 9, 2018, Port St. Lucie Police Sergeant Timothy Petronico was arrested on a warrant by the Florida Department of Law Enforcement on the charge of possession of firearms prohibited by a person with a final domestic violence injunction.  Sergeant Petronico has been placed on un-paid administrative leave pending the outcome of an administrative internal investigation.

During the course of his employment, Sergeant Petronico had an active restraining order against him preventing him to own or possess a firearm off-duty.  On December 5, 2017, it came to the attention of the Police Administration that Sergeant Petronico was in possession of a firearm while he was off-duty.  On December 7, 2017, Sergeant Petronico was placed on paid-administrative leave with pay while the Florida Department of Law Enforcement conducted a criminal investigation into the matter. 

Port St. Lucie Police Department hired Timothy Petronico (49 years old) on June 11, 2004, and was promoted to the rank of Sergeant on November 4, 2015. In accordance with Section 790.233(3) Florida Statutes, an injunction does not prohibit a state or local police officer from possessing a firearm and ammunition for use in performing official duties on behalf of the officer’s employing agency.

Any questions relating to the arrest or charges will be handled the Florida Department of Law Enforcement.
