Port St. Lucie Parks and Recreation hosts panel discussion about opioid epidemic

What: Join the City of Port St. Lucie Parks & Recreation Department’s HealthyU program for a forum that spreads awareness on issues related to substance use disorder. The panel discussion is free and open to the public. Panelists include Former Chair of the Treasure Coast Opioid Task Force Dr. Deborah Dreher, Port St. Lucie Police Officer Fred Knaggs and Port St. Lucie resident and current Chair of the Treasure Coast Opioid Task Force Patricia Roberts.

When: Wednesday, Aug. 3, from 6:30-8 p.m.

Where: Port St. Lucie Community Center, 2195 SE Airoso Blvd., Port St. Lucie

Why: The speakers will explore the science and statistics and share their knowledge on the opioid epidemic that has taken the lives of more than 107,000 Americans in 2021 and continues to affect our local community and our country. Panelists will discuss the latest progress in opioid use prevention, engaging community members to work together to promote awareness and treatment of substance use in their community. Topics will also include the history of opioids, how to detect signs of an opioid use disorder and offer ways to help a loved one with opioid addiction, including potential treatment options. Listen to one family member’s perspective after losing a son to an opioid overdose and her drive to spread awareness of the disease and eradicate its stigma.

This discussion is a safe space to connect those who need help or guidance to resources addressing opioid addiction. St. Lucie County resident Tiffany Graves will also present a powerful real-life testimony. The opioid awareness forum is part of HealthyU: A series of conversations, a program established to promote emotional well-being while enhancing the quality of life.
