Families of accident victims in Port Saint Lucie have been calling for safer streets for years. City officials say they have a plan, which involves spending hundreds of thousands on new sidewalks.

In just two years, 104 people have been hit by cars and most incidents are blamed on a lack of sidewalks. The city of Port Saint Lucie increased funding on sidewalks from $250,000 to $800,000 this year.

On Thursday, crews installed a brand new walking bridge on Darwin Boulevard just feet from where police say a child was struck and killed by an impaired driver a few years ago.

City officials say dozens of other roads are scheduled to get the same treatment with new sidewalks built or dead ends connected. Including on Tiffany Avenue, where a boy was struck and killed while riding his bike to school in 2013.
