Murder in Okeechobee, Shooter expected to survive

Sheriff’s detectives in Okeechobee County are investigating a murder and an officer-involved shooting. The murder took place at a mobile home park southeast of the town of Okeechobee. The typically quiet Larkee Lakes mobile home park  turned into pandemonium. Neighbors say a man gunned down his wife about 5pm Friday and drove off.

60-year old David Schwendenmann of Okeechobee shot and killed his wife, Angela, in the mobile home they shared near the town of Okeechobee. Officials say Schwendenmann drove off, but deputies caught up with him on Highway 441. Two deputies fired multiple rounds at Schwendenman’s SUV, striking him and his SUV. The sheriff called the shooting justified, saying that the two deputies who shot Schwendenmann did what they had to do. However, witnesses at the scene Friday evening paint a different picture. They say deputies put stop sticks in the road to flatten his tires—but Schwendenmann came to a stop before he hit the sticks. The witnesses claim that the deputies began shooting as soon as the car came to a stop, with no warning. The sheriff’s office says it did not unfold like the eyewitnesses have said, but they are not releasing further details. The Sheriff says Schwendenmann is expected to survive.
