MCSO Deputy and off duty Firefighter rescue couple from burning vehicle

MARTIN COUNTY SHERIFF’S DEPUTY, OFF-DUTY FIREFIGHTER RESCUE COUPLE FROM BURNING VEHICLE

A Martin County Sheriff’s Deputy, and an off duty Miramar firefighter are being credited with rescuing two people trapped in a burning car this afternoon.

The single vehicle crash happened in a wooded area off of Kanner Highway near the RaceTrac gas station.

Deputy David Yun was passing the area when he saw several people running towards the car which had hit a pole. Heavy smoke was billowing from the front end. Flames were visible. Deputy Yun immediately began assisting an off duty firefighter.  The firefighter  was trying to get the female driver out of the car. Within seconds, smoke and flames began to fill the inside of the vehicle to the point that it was difficult to see if anyone else was in the car.

Then  Deputy Yun learned that there was a male in the passenger seat. He ran to the other side of the vehicle and pulled the man from the burning car. Shortly afterwards, the car became fully engulfed and parts of the vehicle exploded. An off duty nurse assisted the victims until paramedics arrived.

The couple was taken to the hospital. They are being treated for injuries sustained in the crash.

Their names have not yet been released.

The cause is under investigation.
