MCSO DEPUTIES AVERT TRAGEDY AFTER STOPPING INTOXICATED WRONG WAY DRIVER

Martin County, Fl (treasurecoast.com)- The Martin County Sheriff reported that they averted tragedy after stopping an intoxicated wrong way driver.

This is what they said:

26-year old Darian Curbelo didn’t want to stop. Now we know why.
Curbelo led Martin County Sheriff’s Deputies on a heart racing pursuit as he drove his vehicle at a high rate of speed on I-95 last night.
Speed wasn’t the only action that made this event dangerous.

Curbelo was driving northbound in the southbound lanes of the interstate.

As you can see on our traffic dash cam video, Curbelo narrowly missed an oncoming motorist. Deputies concerned that he would seriously injure or kill someone did everything they could to stop him and risked their own lives doing so. At one point Curbelo drove into a rest area, and as deputy vehicles approached the car, Curbelo drove towards them head on.
MCSO was able to keep Curbelo on the shoulder, then box him in bringing the car to a stop. He was arrested and charged with fleeing and eluding, reckless driving and DUI. Curbelo was nearly three times over the legal limit.
