Lyft, St. Lucie County Partner to Assist the Transportation Disadvantaged

  1. LUCIE COUNTY – Lyft, the fastest growing rideshare company in the U.S., and the county have joined forces. They aim to provide transportation services for residents enrolled in the county’s Direct Connect Program for the Transportation Disadvantaged.  The new transportation initiative provides after-hours and weekend service for senior citizens, people with disabilities and low-income residents who require access to employment, education, non-emergency healthcare and life sustaining activities including grocery shopping. St. Lucie County funds all or a substantial portion of the Lyft fare based on an individual’s ability to pay.

“Lyft service creates a flexible, cost effective solution for the people that need transportation assistance the most,” said David Engel, transportation planner for St. Lucie County. “The Lyft – St. Lucie County partnership reflects a true commitment to empower seniors, people with disabilities and financially distressed families to improve their quality of life through improved mobility.”

Demand for the new Direct Connect in St. Lucie is high and growing as new qualified clients from students to seniors enter the program each week. Students attending evening classes at area colleges and universities find the Direct Connect service essential to reaching their evening classes.  Individuals working late shifts are now able to fully access their jobs without hardship or difficulty.  And, seniors throughout the community are using the service to meet their mobility needs when regular transit service is unavailable.

Direct Connect serves all of St. Lucie County and provides drop- offs or pick-ups in adjacent Martin and Indian River counties, traversing the entire Treasure Coast region of Florida’s Atlantic Coast.

“We are excited to partner with St. Lucie County to help provide critical Jobs Access and Community Mobility programs, and work towards our mission of improving people’s lives with the world’s best transportation,” said Debs Schrimmer, Lyft’s transportation policy manager. “Together, our goal is to reduce transportation barriers by providing convenient alternative transportation options that decouple mobility from car-ownership.”
