Kilmer Library Helps Residents Digitize Memories with the Memory Studio

FORT PIERCE – As we become a more digital society, the Susan Broom Kilmer Library is launching a new workspace to help residents convert and preserve their analog memories. The new Memory Studio inside the Kilmer Branch will offer several open house sessions to showcase the area’s capabilities.

Open House Events for the Memory Studio include:

  • Wednesday, May 4 from 1:30 to 4:30 p.m. – Scanning Photographs
  • Wednesday, May 11 from 1:30 to 4:30 p.m. – Editing Photographs
  • Wednesday, May 18 from 1:30 to 4:30 p.m. – Digitizing VHS Tapes
  • Wednesday, May 25 from 1:30 to 4:30 p.m. – Using Adobe Premiere Elements.

Located inside the Kilmer Branch, the Memory Studio is a free, do-it-yourself space to digitize photos, videos, sound recordings and other formats. To use a station, visitors must have a current St. Lucie County Library card. Youth under 16 who wish to use the studio must be accompanied by an adult with an active library card unless involved in a library program or workshop.

The Memory Studio stations include equipment such as color scanners/printers (additional charges for printing apply), an overhead document scanner for large prints, transparency and negative flatbed scanner, VHS and DVD players, 8mm and super 8 reels movie digitizer, multifunctional record player and digital converter and access to Adobe Photoshop Elements and Adobe Premier Elements.

Patrons are encouraged to bring personal external storage devices such as flash drives or have their log-in information to online cloud-based storage sites. A limited number of flash drives (4GB) are available at the Library for $5 each.

Memory Studio sessions are available during regular branch hours, unless the space is being used for library programs/workshops. Cardholders may place reservations up to two weeks in advance either by telephone (772-462-2187) or in person at the reference desk. Cardholders are limited to no more than two sessions per day, or four per week.  Each reservation is for up to two hours. Reservations will be held for 15 minutes. After that, stations may be made available to the next person or group in line.

Located at 101 Melody Lane in downtown Fort Pierce, the Susan B. Kilmer Branch is open Tuesdays and Thursdays from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m., Wednesdays from 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. and Fridays and Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. For more information call 772-462-1615 or visit: www.stlucielibrary.org.
