Kids and officers finish 1st night of FPPD’s Shop With A Cop program

Fort Pierce police officers and kids from the St. Lucie County Boys & Girls Clubs just finished their shopping spree at Walmart on Okeechobee Road, and there were plenty of happy smiles from both.

Thirty-three kids arrived by bus. They were given gift cards to spend however they wanted, while officers guided them through the store and helped them find their favorite items. It was the first of three holiday gift events the Fort Pierce Police Department is doing this year to make the season bright for more than 100 children in the city.

The next Shop-With-A-Cop will be on Wednesday, Dec. 20, also at Walmart. Participants in that event were chosen by officers who met the kids while handling calls for service during the year. Then on Thursday, Dec. 21, the FPPD Santa Cop event will take place at the main police station. Here other children selected by the officers will be given gifts donated during the recent motorcycle toy run.

Building bridges with young people is an important part of police work. It is the goal of FPPD to establish relationships that encourage children to make good choices in life.

Through community partnerships with businesses such as Walmart and organizations like the Boys & Girls Clubs, Fort Pierce police officers are reaching deeper than ever into the community and improving the quality of life in the city. The generous donations from many people and organizations this season is greatly appreciated.
