Judge to decide on Austin Harrouff insanity plea
Martin County, Fl (treasurecoast.com) -A former college student who randomly killed a Florida couple in their garage six years ago and then chewed on one victim’s face finally goes on trial Monday, with a judge deciding whether he goes to prison for life or to a mental hospital.
Austin Harrouff was 19 when he killed Michelle Mishcon and John Stevens in their garage in 2016.
Now his fate will be decided by a judge; there is no jury (as agreed upon by lawyers on both sides).
Here’s what happened on the night of August 15th, 2016 in Tequesta:
Harrouf was eating dinner at Duffy’s on Indiantown road with his father.
He’s seen in security camera footage- walking away from the table.
Austin leaves Duffys and wanders out into the community. He walks more than 3 miles.
At some point during his trek, he strips off his clothes, then, naked, winds up outside John Steven’s house.
Using a pocket knife and garage tools, Harrouff stabbed John and Michele repeatedly.
A neighbor, Jeff Fisher, saw what was happening and ran over to help – Harrouf attacked him as well, until Fisher retreated back to his house and called 9-1-1.
When deputies arrived, they used a taser on Harrouff and a police dog, neither slowed him down.
He screamed at deputies to shoot him.
