Woman shot after lunging IRSO deputy with a knife

Woman shot after lunging IRSO deputy with a knife.

A Vero Beach Woman is dead. Deputy Jonathan Lozada fired at 62-year-old Susan Teel at a home along Carriage Lake Way after she lunged at him with a large butcher knife, the sheriff’s office said.

Sheriff’s records indicate there have been 24 prior calls at the home, most of them involving other family members.

Two days before Susan Teel attempted suicide she had a violent confrontation in her home with her son and his wife.

She was grabbed by the hair and thrown down a flight of stairs by her son, James Teel. Her head was bashed into some tiles on Monday, leaving her fearing for her life, sheriff’s reports show.

James Tell was placed under arrest for battery domestic violence. He was taken to the Indian River County Jail.

Then on Wednesday night Susan Teel was shot dead in her attempted suicide in an upstairs bathroom.

Teel’s husband found his wife in the bathtub cutting herself with a razor on Wednesday night. A 911 call was made at 8 pm.  Deputies arrived on the scene at 8:04. The husband informed the deputies that the wife was up stairs trying to kill herself. “As the deputy went up the stairs and approached the bedroom he encountered a subject who was trying to kill him with a large butcher knife.’ Said Deryl Loar, IRSO

The deputy is on paid administrative leave, which is standard department policy when there is a shooting.
