Indian River County EOC Emergency Alerts: Alberto

The National Hurricane Center is issuing advisories for Subtropical Storm Alberto which has formed over the northwestern Caribbean Sea.  Heavy rainfall is expected to affect the Yucatan Peninsula, western Cuba, Florida, and the northeastern Gulf Coast through the weekend.

Minimum Central Pressure:   1005 mb

Located at:   19.5N  86.5W

Movement:  Stationery

On the current track, Alberto is expect to pass near the eastern coast of the Yucatan peninsula tonight, be near the western tip of Cuba Saturday morning, emerge over the southeastern Gulf of Mexico by Saturday night, and approach the north-central Gulf Coast on Monday.

According to the National Weather Service:

  • There is no direct threat to east central Florida but locally heavy rainfall is expected through at least Memorial Day as a very moist tropical air mass lingers while producing bands of heavy showers and scattered lightning storms across east central Florida.
  • The main hazard with this system will be locally heavy rainfall with the potential for localized flooding. Dangerous cloud to ground lightning strikes, gusty winds and an isolated tornado will also be a concern as the system moves generally northward over the Gulf of Mexico.
  • Boating conditions are expected to deteriorate heading during the holiday weekend. Expect increasing winds and building seas with higher shower and lightning storm chances.
