THE HONEST BROKER: PLAY ROOMS MAKE A COMEBACK!

THE HONEST BROKER: PLAY ROOMS MAKE A COMEBACK!

If nothing else, this pandemic has made many families re-think the importance of having a specific room to keep the adults and kids entertained while withstanding the restrictions on many of their normal outside activities.  Prior to the shutting down of local businesses in March, going to restaurants, movie theaters, arcades and heading to the mall all played a big part of our recreational life.  Now the mantra heard from home to home is… “I’M BORED!!!” These words are being spoken out of the mouths of kids, teens, parents, as well as those in their senior years.

After 5 months of lockdown, with no end in sight, I am being asked to find homes that have the potential for a family “play” room, a dedicated area that would help take the place of outside recreation.

The following are suggestions for the rooms that can be used and how to transform them into that recreational space that is desired. If a home has both a family room and a formal living room, the family room would be the easiest transformation, of course, a den, office or extra bedroom would suffice.

For young families, outfit this space with items that would be of interest, such as; table tennis, large TV interfaced w/ a game system (XBOX, Wii, PLAYSTATION) and even possibly a drop down projector screen to run old family movies.  Make it fun and festive by adding a popcorn machine, small fridge, memorabilia, pennants, etc.  For an older family or empty nesters, utilize items that would reflect their needs; such as a pool table, game table, dart board, big screen TV, and if missing the nights out at the local pubs or sports bar, create a “cantina” or bar-like atmosphere with a sound system or even a jukebox.  Expand your recreational space to the backyard.  For example, fire pits, badminton, volleyball, horseshoes, or “corn hole” are all great games to entertain kids of all ages.

Who knows?  When we are finally allowed to move freely again, we just may not want to anymore.  Our homes will become our playgrounds.

Stay well and stay healthy!
