The Honest Broker: Home, Hearth & the Family Meal
By Diane Lott
The kitchen is the place where a family’s heartbeat can be seen and felt throughout a home. As a realtor that has shown a multitude of homes, I have found that the kitchen’s importance is tied evenly with the master bedroom’s importance. Clients tend to walk directly into the kitchen of most homes and decide on whether the house will work for them or not by how functional the kitchen happens to be. The kitchen is “command central” for entertaining, family gatherings and daily meals shared with loved ones. It must be easy to get around without obstructions and have enough space for preparation, talking, and cooking.
Thanksgiving is the one American holiday that centers around the “feast”. People prepare family recipes that they have experienced over the years and come together to share this meal and express their gratitude for each other and their many blessings. This past Thanksgiving, the hostess/host may have had fewer guests and less food. Well, maybe they prepared the same amount of food and had more leftovers, but the sentiment and the reason to share the day with loved ones was still the aim. The kitchen was still “command central” for the day. The activity shared around a dinner table is just as important on that day, as well as every other day of the year. Sharing our daily thoughts, experiences, and upcoming plans hold family and friends together.
The kitchen is the hub of the home. People spend most of their time, while there, in the kitchen either cooking, cleaning up after a meal or just chatting with friends and family. It is no wonder that it is so significant. Clients want it to be visually appealing along with being highly functional. Also, statistically, it is one of the better returns on investment when considering a remodeling project because any improvements made to its appeal and functionality will be financially rewarded when it is time to sell and move on. Until that time, it will be your homes’ “command central” and heartbeat of your home.
Happy Thanksgiving to all…..
