Historic Dodgertown Hunter Greene drafted as the No. 2 pick

Historic Dodgertown participant Hunter Greene drafted as the No. 2 pick in the first round of the Major League Baseball free agent draft.

As a 15-year-old, Greene participated in the first MLB EDI camp held at Historic Dodgertown.

17-year-old Hunter Greene is an alumni of Major League Baseball and the Major League Baseball Players Association Elite Development Invitational camp held at Historic Dodgertown. Today he  was selected as the number two overall pick in the June 2017 MLB Free Agent Draft by the Cincinnati Reds.

About Greene

In 2015 and as a 15-year-old, Greene traveled from his home in Sherman Oaks, Calif. to Historic Dodgertown for the EDI camp to be coached by more than 30 former major leaguers, including Dodger great Maury Wills in the art of bunting, former Dodger star outfielder Kenny Landreaux, and former MLB pitchers Lee Smith and Tom Gordon.  He also walked in the same footsteps his as boyhood idol Jackie Robinson.

From the age of seven, Greene participated in the MLB Urban Youth Academy in Compton, Calif.

Greene continued about stepping up to be a role model to minorities.

“It is something that I really want to help out. If there is anything I can do, go to ballclubs and go to Little Leagues and just talk to them , and inspire them to be the greatest they can be, is something I’d love to do.”

MLB EDI camp

The MLB EDI camp is invitation-only, and the boys selected are considered prospects with the potential for a career in professional baseball.

The 6-foot-4, 205 pound right-handed pitcher/shortstop from Notre Dame High School in Sherman Oaks — who was recently featured on the cover of the April Sports Illustrated with an in-depth article inside the magazine — earned a top stop in the draft, in large part due to his fastball which has been clocked at 102 mph.

This July, EDI returns to Historic Dodgertown with the exciting announcement that girls softball will be added in 2017.

MLB and the Major League Baseball Players Association will add girls softball to its third annual EDI camp at Historic Dodgertown. The camp will continue to welcome boys for two weeks of baseball training.  The coaches are all former Major Leaguers.  The new softball camp will feature one week of professional-level softball instruction for high school-aged girls from across the country.

Said Darrell Miller said Hunter is a glowing example of a young man who did the work and listened to good instructors at Compton.”We are really proud of his ability, but more proud of his character. He embodies what can happen when you buy in (to the system) and stick with it.”
