Ft Pierce Police could be one step closer to Body Cameras

Ft. Pierce city leaders could be one step closer to equipping their police officers with body cameras.

City commissioners heard the latest proposal Monday night. Those in favor of body cameras say it’s an investment that would not only be a valuable tool for law enforcement, but also help build trust in the community.

Under the proposed plan, the city would buy 100 body cameras for all of their patrol officers, as well as a few undercover officers. The officers would then be required to make every effort to have the cameras roll while responding to calls.

The push comes after two officers were involved in the fatal shooting of an unarmed black man during a traffic stop back in April 2016. While a final vote is expected by the end of the year, there’s still some concerns surrounding the cameras, especially when it comes to cyber security once that footage gets uploaded. The program would cost about $90,000 a year.
