FPPD files DUI-related charges in September crash that killed woman and injured child

Fort Pierce, Fla- A Fort Pierce man was charged Monday afternoon with several criminal traffic offenses relating to a fatal auto crash that occurred September 1 at Avenue P and North 23rd Street.

On that date at about 3:30 p.m., Fort Pierce officers were called to investigate a crash at the intersection. Investigation revealed that Waldron Brown, 39, of the 2000 block of North 45th Street, was driving a 2016 Chevrolet Impala. He was driving eastbound on Avenue P when he ran a stop sign. Then, he crashed into the driver side of a southbound 2001 Saturn.

The driver of the Saturn, Carla Smith, 55, was transported to Lawnwood Regional Medical Center. She later died of her injuries. Her 4-year-old granddaughter, Geniya Smith, had to be extricated from the vehicle by St. Lucie County Fire Rescue and was flown to Palm Beach Children’s Hospital at St. Mary’s Medical Center in West Palm Beach.

Another passenger in the Saturn, Shawn Brown, 45, was treated at Lawnwood and released.

Investigators determined that Waldron Brown had a blood alcohol level of .146 at the time of the crash. They say he was driving at least 71 miles an hour in a 25 mile an hour zone, in addition to running the stop sign.

Traffic Homicide Investigator Shayne Stokes obtained a warrant for Brown’s arrest. He served him Monday while Brown was in the St. Lucie County jail on unrelated DUI and weapons charges. The new charges include vehicular homicide, DUI manslaughter, DUI with serious bodily injury, and two counts of DUI with property damage.
